Cycling and Bike Hire at Bewl Water

Family-friendly cycle routes in Kent and East Sussex

Bike riding is a great way to get around Bewl Water with something for everybody. From families looking for a fun day out in Lamberhurst to experienced cyclists ready for a new challenge, our 12 ½ miles of scenic cycling routes are fit for all abilities.

Due to the ongoing upgrade of the Bewl Water reservoir, access to the top of the dam will be closed throughout 2024. However, please be aware that diversions have been put in place and the path around the bottom of the dam will still be open for use.

Customer Notice

Please be advised that the bike trail will be partially closed from 31st October 2024 until late March 2025. During this period, only 1.75 miles in each direction from the Waterfront Café will be accessible.

This seasonal closure helps us protect the grounds, as the winter months bring heavy mud and increased wear to the trail. By reducing traffic, we’re helping to preserve the trail’s natural environment for everyone to enjoy year-round.

We recommend collecting a map from the Waterfront Café or bike hire shop. You can also download it by clicking below.

Cycling routes

We have 12 ½ miles of surfaced trails, country lanes and scenic meadows for cyclists to explore, most of it off road and traffic-free. This cycling route combines flat paths perfect for families and more challenging hills for experienced riders. We have placed mile markers around the route, which takes between 2 – 3 hours to complete so you know how far you’ve come!
